BALFOR Releases Promo And Video For Free Download Via Net Label
July 15, 2007BALFOR, the Ukrainian band that defines its music as "Barbaric black metal," has joined the ever-increasing number of bands who are releasing their work for free download on the Internet. Rather than host the four-track promo exclusively on their own web site, the band has chosen to release its "Pure Barbaric Promo" through net label Nailed Skull.
Commented Thorgeir, BALFOR's founder and frontman: "It's not something we would choose to do for the release of a full-length, but rather than self-releasing as some bands do, we decided to go the route of releasing our promo for free download. We were impressed with what Nailed Skull were doing. They aren't just putting up the music and saying 'Here it is, take it,' but they are presenting everything in a professional manner, with cover artwork as well, something that fans often miss out on when downloading for free, and they promote the bands they are working with. It seemed like the perfect way to bring the band to the attention of a wider audience, whilst at the same time enabling us to produce 'hard copies' of the promo to send out for review and to labels. We're very happy with the results, at the moment we're averaging around 100 downloads a day, so we're obviously reaching many more people than we would, had we self-released.”
Thorgeir (vocals/guitar) formed BALFOR in 1997 and the current lineup, which includes Berowar on bass and Erland on drums, continues to play fast, melodious black metal in which the influences of both death metal, and their country's warrior past can be heard. "The reaction from fans to the new material has been amazing," says Thorgeir. "We're getting reviews in the 8-9/10 region. We seem to be drawing interest not just from the black metal fans, but also death metal, and after we supported SUIDAKRA, from amongst the pagan/Viking elements, which is very satisfying to us because we look on our music as a tribute to the Ukraine's ancient past."
The band is currently working on new material, and looking for a label to release the first full-length album.
